The Galena Ag Fair was held the weekend after we arrived back here in Galena. It is a time for everyone to show off their beautiful vegetables, jams, jellies, flowers, crafts, photos, quilts, and anything else that might be Fair like material (minus the livestock). It was a rainy and cold summer here, so some of the produce was not as big as it usually is. Usually the "Land of the Midnight Sun" produces some pretty big Veggies, but sadly it wasn't the best summer for that. However there were still some expert gardeners with green houses that helped their precious veggies to grow.

It is hard to grow Sunflowers and Tomatoes here because we don't have the intense heat or a long growing season, but you can see both behind the girls. Our pastor's wife grew these with a little help from their green house. |

Gardening is an art form here as one can't just plop the seed in the soil and hope it grows. Seeds must be started inside when the weather outside is still well below freezing. A lot of people have green houses to help their vegetables get a head start on the short growing season. The soil has to be enriched as by itself it is not nutritious enough for most of the plants. The long days of sun in the summer help with the short growing season but most of the time it is not hot enough long enough to grow the hotter weather plants such as tomatoes (unless one has a green house). I have not learned this art form yet as we get the privilege of my Mom dropping the seeds in the soil before we even arrive in Montana for the summer. Things grow fairly easily in Montana. The down side is, we usually have to be back up here to start school before most of the harvesting of the produce is done in Montana, but we are thankful for the produce we do get while we are there. Sometimes my Mom even sends me a box of carrots in the mail, dug from her garden during the middle of winter. Our neighbor is a master gardener and we are very thankful for he and his wife planting some potatoes for us that we will soon be harvesting.
Now for the fun and games...
