Butchering Chickens - For Those Who Are Not Faint of Heart!

With the Migraine diet I am on, I can't eat meat with added things in it.  It has to be just plain meat.  So at the beginning of the summer I decided to get 25 chicks to feed organically and butcher at the end of the summer.  The girls had the chore of feeding them every day and Grandma ended up doing it for us as well when we were travelling.  Thankfully the girls didn't get too attached and butchering them didn't seem to bother them as much as I thought it might.  It wasn't too much fun, especially since we had to do it right after my leg injury but I was so thankful for my Dad, Brother, and Nephews' help.  My Mom had to sit out because of her staph infection.  I will be extra thankful when I am up in Galena and have nice organic chicken to eat and have a little break from moose meat!  Here are a few pictures if you so choose to look...

After being outside for most of the day helping, Marina came inside and told Grandma that she wasn't having any fun.  Grandma asked her if she liked any part of butchering chickens?  Marina said, "Yes!  Chopping off the heads!"  Later that night she told me that this had been a great day!  I asked her if she liked butchering chickens and she said yes.  I asked her what her favorite part was and this is what she had to say, "I liked chopping off the heads and watching them run around and flap their wings with their heads off.  Why do they do that, Mommy?  That was so silly!  Wasn't it?"

She is her father's daughter!  You can tell she has been around hunting and butchering...maybe a little too much!  I was so surprised she wasn't sad about it at all!  I didn't put any pictures of the chopping block as I thought it may be a little too morbid to show on here.
